South 1st Street Neighborhood

South 1st Street Neighborhood

$0.00

Building on the success of Southwood Community, the City of Charlottesville sponsored a similar community-led process for South First Street, a predominantly African American public housing community. There were fifteen Resident Planners who participated in several community-based work sessions and Charrettes. The community visited different types of neighborhoods, established design values, and learned technical planning skills that ranged from planning green space to reading a blueprint. As a result, the design evolved into 113 one to five-bedroom townhomes and apartments with clubhouse, non-residential space, basketball court, bicycle parking, and park amenities.

Waterstreet Studio participated in the resident-led design sessions and developed the landscape concept and plan.
