Water Street Studio worked closely with the family of this small garden in the Fan District of Richmond, Virginia to renovate their backyard to create a more useable space for outdoor dining and play with their daughters.
Since the space was confined, it was essential to keep the overall design minimal while creating unique, artfully constructed details. A Cumaru wood and Corten steel terrace is primarily used for dining, while the turf and concrete lower level is used for games. Step seating uses the same materials and negotiates the elevation change between the two spaces. The stairs also double as an amphitheater for movie watching and children’s performances for family and friends. A custom swing set sits in the turf and also serves as a place from which to hang the movie screen.
