A pond is the centerpiece of the Boar’s Head Inn, a sports club, hotel and conference center owned by the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Despite regular maintenance, algae, sediment, murky water and sparse fauna indicated a struggling ecosystem. Water Street Studio was hired to analyze the current conditions and to suggest future improvements.
Water Street landscape architects provided an environmental analysis that included an inventory of existing conditions and recommendations for improving water quality. The algae bloom and sedimentation presented not only environmental issues, but also created an eyesore to the grounds’ visitors. The inventory revealed macro and micro scale pollution and, with this knowledge, the studio then offered ideas to reduce these impacts with a management master plan, Low Impact Development (LID) storm water management strategy and design solutions. Together these documents were used to improve both the aquatic and the aesthetic health of the pond.
